ALDI adds compostable tableware line

Last spring, Batavia, Ill.-based ALDI made a pledge to reduce single-use plastic, going as far as committing to a goal of having 100% of its packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable by the year 2025. Chipping away at that honorable goal, the retailer announced it will be selling new compostable tableware in stores in eight states.

"The commitments we're making to reduce plastic packaging waste are an investment in our collective future that we are proud to make," said Jason Hart, CEO of ALDI U.S.

The compostable plates, cups and utensils are from the manufacturer Repurpose, Los Angeles, and can be found in Southern California as well as major cities such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Orlando and Tampa.

Repurpose said the company’s products are an alternative to paper or Styrofoam products and produce up to 82% fewer emissions and 65% less energy than plastic. In all, the company has helped to keep more than 3.5 million pounds of waste out of landfills.

As an alternative to traditional plastic, Repurpose's products are BPI certified and 100% compostable in an industrial composter in 180 days.

The company makes branded and private label products and can be found in more than 15,000 retailers, including Albertsons, Safeway, Wegmans Food Markets, Whole Foods Market and more.
