Store Brands in the Wild: Southwest Spotlight

Store Brands’ In the Wild takes a jaunt to New Mexico, where convenience retailer Allsup's (owned by Yesway) and an Air Force Commissary are spotlighting their private label offerings.

First up, an Allsups location in Santa Fe had its snacks and hot sauces on full display, with tortilla chips, nacho cheese chips, hot pork rinds and more given prominent placement near the cash register. Allsups, known for its ready-to-eat Mexican fare — burritos, chimichangas and tamales — was selling its private brand taco sauce for those who like the store’s packets enough to keep a bottle at the ready. The c-store also was selling restaurant-style salsa in red and green varieties with local favorite, Hatch green chile.

In Albuquerque, the Commissary on Kirtland Air Force Base was showcasing its store brands — aptly named Freedom’s Choice for food items — with on-shelf tags. The tags invite consumers to compare the store brands to leading national brands in categories that include canned goods, cheese and more.

Not pictured, the Commissary's own brand nonfood home goods (trash bags, etc.), called Homebase.
