Although they’ve been available since January, around the same time many retailers were launching their plant-based meat products, Trader Joe’s promoted its plant-based protein patties on its “What’s New” tab this week, offering a little more info on the product.

Read more on how retailers have changed the plant-based meat game with their store brand offerings in Store Brands’ plant-based meat report.

The pack of two Trader Joe’s meat-free protein patties go for $4.50, a dollar or two less than most retailers and national plant-based brands. Trader Joe’s describes the patties as pea-based, quarter-pound patties that have a flavor and texture of traditional beef hamburgers but with no meat or any animal-based ingredients, making it fully vegan.

The use of beets in the ingredients give it a soft and pink look in the middle. And, driven predominantly be the peas, the patties have 18 grams of protein.

Trader Joe’s said on its website with the listing that “plant-based burgers have become one of the most popular food trends of the past few years, and there’s no sign of slowing down.”
