Nearly every retailer is looking to do its part, setting up ambitious sustainability targets and goals. For example, Target is seeking to be a net zero enterprise by 2040; Ahold Delhaize USA aims to ensure sustainably sourced seafood, coffee and tea products are 100% sustainably certified in cocoa, palm oil, pulp, and paper products and packaging; and Aldi is striving to make 100% of its Aldi-exclusive packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.

One way retailers can reach these goals faster is through composting — where applicable. On Jan. 12, Store Brands is hosting a webinar that goes further into the ways composting can be beneficial through own brand packaging and products, the certification process for compostable products, how landfills are impacted, and how retailers can take the lead in this area though private brands and communicating with consumers and suppliers.

Moderated by Dan Ochwat, executive editor, Store Brands, the webinar features insights from leaders inside the world of composting, packaging and product development. The panelists include:

  • Susan Thoman, managing director, Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA)
  • Rhodes Yepsen, executive director, Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI)
  • Glenn Abrahamson, CEO, BB17 Inc.
  • Solange Ackrill, vice president of marketing and corporate strategy, Club Coffee

Thoman and Yepsen addressed composting at a recent Store Brands Industry Forum on beverages, looking at how coffee is driving initiatives forward, as well as other issues. This webinar broadens the scope mightily. Ackrill and Abrahamson are leaders in producing compostable product options.

Ackrill helps drive innovation at Club Coffee, as discussed in a recent Q&A, where she highlighted a long list of sustainable programs including its compostable coffee pods. Abrahamson and BB17 lead the way in providing affordable compostable products that replace traditional plastic material items such as tablewares, trash bags, straws and food bags.

Together, from a product side, looking at regulation issues, and how to work alongside organizations like CMA and BPI, the panel will give attendees insights into how to better understand composting and move it forward.
